Your Seattle Apartment Move Starts at the Curb

The first box can still be taped shut and the move can already be running behind.

The truck circles the block. The loading area is occupied. The elevator needs a key that lives with a building manager who arrives later. A sofa fits through the apartment door, but not around the turn at the bottom of the stairs.

None of that is really about boxes. It is about the path between the home and the truck.

For an apartment or condo move, that path deserves its own plan—at both addresses.

Walk the route like you are carrying something

A normal walk from the curb to your front door can hide a lot. Walk it again while imagining two people carrying a dresser, a mattress, or a wide piece of furniture.

Start where a moving vehicle can actually stop. Then follow the whole route:

• From the curb or loading area to the building entrance

• Through gates, call boxes, security doors, and lobby doors

• Along hallways and around tight corners

• Up stairs or into the elevator

• From the elevator or landing to the apartment door

• Through the apartment to the rooms where things need to go

Look for low branches, steep ramps, narrow landings, door closers, uneven pavement, and any stretch that turns a short walk into a long carry. Make those conditions visible before moving day, even if some still need a solution.

Ask the building questions early

Many buildings have their own rhythm. The elevator may be available only during a reserved window. A loading dock may use a separate entrance. Management may want notice, paperwork, protective materials, or a specific route through the property.

Ask the origin and destination buildings the same questions:

1. Does a move need to be scheduled with management?

2. Is there a service elevator, and does it require a reservation or key?

3. Are there approved moving hours?

4. Which entrance should the crew use?

5. Is there a loading area, and who controls access to it?

6. Are there door, floor, or hallway protection requirements?

7. Will someone need to meet the crew or open a secured area?

Write down the contact name and the confirmed time window. “I think the elevator is open” is a fragile moving plan.

Treat parking as part of the move

Parking is not a detail that begins when the truck arrives. A vehicle that cannot get near the entrance changes the carry distance, the route, and the time needed to move belongings safely.

Check the curb at the same time of day as the planned move if you can. A quiet spot on Sunday evening may look very different on a weekday morning. Notice posted restrictions, bus zones, bike lanes, garage clearances, construction, and entrances that must remain open.

If the location has limited parking or a controlled loading area, include that in the quote request. Do not assume a curb space or permit is handled unless it has been specifically confirmed.

Measure the places that cannot move

Furniture can be turned. Walls, railings, and elevator doors cannot.

For large pieces, measure the item and the narrowest parts of the route. Door width is only one number. Check height, hallway turns, stairwell clearance, elevator-door opening, and the elevator interior. A photo of a tight corner is often more useful than a note that says “small hallway,” so have one ready if requested.

Flag anything unusually large, heavy, fragile, or difficult to disassemble. That gives the team a chance to review the item instead of discovering it at the narrowest point in the building.

Repeat the plan at the new address

It is easy to spend all your attention on getting out. The destination is where tired people, unfamiliar rooms, and a growing stack of boxes meet.

Confirm the destination entrance, elevator, parking, and access window with the same care. Decide where boxes should land and label them by destination room. If two rooms have similar names, make the labels unmistakable: “front bedroom,” “office by kitchen,” or “lower-level storage.”

A simple diagram is enough if it reduces decisions while people are carrying things.

A five-minute message that helps

Before moving day, send one clear access summary for each address:

Origin: third-floor apartment, reserved service elevator from 9–11, loading entrance on the alley side, manager will provide the key. About 120 feet from loading area to elevator.

Destination: second floor, one interior flight of stairs, street parking only, narrow turn at the landing. Photos are available if requested.

That is far more useful than “there is an elevator” or “parking should be fine.”

The first box may be where the visible work begins. A smoother apartment move starts earlier—at the curb, through the building, and all the way to the room where that box belongs.
